A Visual Story of Tradition, Competition and Community in Guangdong, China

On June 19, {2026} I had the opportunity to photograph one of the most vibrant cultural events in southern China — the Dragon Boat Festival in Foshan (佛山端午节), Guangdong Province. Armed with my Fujifilm X-Pro3 and Fujinon 56mm F1.2 lens, I spent the day walking along the narrow canals, documenting the energy, traditions, and emotions that make this celebration so unique.

Unlike the large international dragon boat races often seen on television, Foshan’s traditional races take place in historic village waterways where local communities gather to support their teams. The atmosphere was electric despite the rainy weather. Crowds lined the canal banks under umbrellas, cheering as colorful dragon boats passed through the narrow waterways decorated with bright flags, banners, and centuries-old traditions.

What impressed me most was the strong connection between the event and the local community. Families, elderly residents, young spectators, and athletes all came together to celebrate a tradition that has been passed down for generations. Between races, the canals were covered with red firecracker remains, creating a vivid contrast against the grey water and adding to the festive atmosphere.

Using the 56mm F1.2 lens allowed me to focus on both the action and the human stories behind it. I captured the determination of the paddlers, the anticipation of spectators watching from the bridges, and small details that often go unnoticed — reflections on the water, traditional decorations, and quiet moments between the races.

The Dragon Boat Festival in Foshan is more than a sporting event. It is a living expression of local culture, community spirit, and heritage. As a street photographer, these are the moments I enjoy documenting most — authentic scenes where tradition and everyday life naturally come together.
