Tangqi Ancient Town, Hangzhou — Street Photography
Tangqi Ancient Town (塘栖古镇) is a historic canal town in the northern part of Hangzhou, China. Located along the Beijing–Hangzhou Grand Canal, Tangqi has a very different atmosphere from the modern city center of Hangzhou. Here, narrow streets, traditional buildings, small shops and waterways create a slower rhythm of everyday life.
I visited Tangqi with my Fujifilm X-Pro3, looking for ordinary moments rather than traditional tourist photographs.
What interested me most was the contrast between the old architecture and contemporary life. People walk through the narrow streets, small shops stay open late into the evening, boats move quietly along the canal, and warm artificial light reflects in the dark water.
The Guangji Bridge is probably the most recognizable landmark in Tangqi. The historic seven-arch stone bridge crosses the Grand Canal and has been an important part of the town for centuries. The bridge and the surrounding canal become particularly atmospheric after sunset, when the traditional buildings are illuminated and their reflections appear in the water.
But for me, the most interesting part of Tangqi was not necessarily the famous landmarks.
It was the street life around them.
A person walking past a small shop. An old-fashioned storefront illuminated at night. A quiet doorway surrounded by plants. A child riding a small toy horse through the street. These small scenes give the town a sense of everyday life that is difficult to capture in traditional tourist photography.
Tangqi is also known for its traditional Jiangnan water-town character, with streets and buildings closely connected to the canal. Historically, the town developed as an important commercial and transportation hub along the Grand Canal.
